Vietnam’s tea exports increased sharply in January

The country’s tea exports in January of 2021 increased sharply over the same period last year because January of 2020 was right on the occasion of the Tet holiday.
According to the Export and Import Department, it is estimated that in January 2021 tea exports reached 10,000 tons, worth of 16 million USD, down by 10.8 percent in volume and 9.7 percent in value compared to December of 2020; but up by 25.8 percent in volume and 30.5 percent in value compared to January of 2020. The average export tea price in January of 2021 reached 1,600 USD per ton, up by 3.7 percent compared to January of 2020. The country’s tea exports in January of 2021 increased sharply because January 2020 was right on the occasion of the Lunar New Year holiday, so export activities were interrupted.
In 2020, the categories of black tea and green tea for export accounted for the highest proportion. In which, black tea exports reached 56,430 tons, worth of 76.19 million USD, down by 0.6 percent in volume and 2.3 percent in value compared to 2019. The average export price of Black tea products in 2020 reached 1,613,000 USD per ton, down by 6.2 percent compared to 2019. Black tea exported mainly to some main markets in 2020 such as Russia, Indonesia, Taiwan and Pakistan.
They were followed by the type of green tea with 56,100 tons, worth of 101.3 million USD, down by 3.6 percent in volume and 13.9 percent in value compared to 2019. The average export price of goods green tea reached 1,805.8 USD per ton, down by 10.7 percent compared to 2019. Green tea exported the most to the Pakistan market, reaching 33,170 tons, worth of 64.29 million USD, down by 13.6 percent in volume and 16.7 percent in value compared to 2019, accounting for 59.1 percent of the total green tea export volume in 2020.
In 2020, exports of flower marinated tea and oolong tea accounted for a low proportion. In which, tea with marinated flowers reached 1,800 tons, worth of 3.5 million USD, down by 5.2 percent in volume and up by 3.7 percent in value; The exports of oolong tea sharply decreased in both volume and value, reaching 321 tons, worth of 822,000 USD, down by 29 percent in volume and 46.7 percent in value compared to 2019.
Import and Export Department cited statistics figures from the United States International Trade Commission, adding that US tea imports in 2020 reached 107,360 tons, worth of 460.49 million USD, down by 10.5 percent in volume and 3.4 percent in value compared to 2019. The average import price of tea in the United States reached 4,289.4 USD per ton, up by 8.0 percent compared to 2019.
The US imported tea mainly from three main markets in 2020, including Argentina, India and China. However, the United States sharply reduced its imports from Argentina and China, but increased imports of tea from the Indian market, reaching 13,700 tons, worth of 56.59 million USD, up by 6.7 percent in volume and an increase of 6.6 percent in value compared to 2019. The share of tea imports from India increased by 2.1 percentage points compared to 2019. Vietnam was the fifth largest tea supplier to the United States, although the volume only accounted for 4.7 percent, an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared to 2019. The amount and value of US tea imports from Vietnam both saw decrease in 2020.
